I am still searching for parents, coaches etc to provide information of events, coaching sessions, and results from tournaments etc Simply get in touch through the S and D Secretary Andrew Bennett at 21 Hunstone Avenue, Sheffield S8 8GE  (Tel: 0114 2740165 email: Andrew.Bennett21@btinternet.com). Hopefully I can then get to know where tournaments are, who is playing from the district, where and when coaching sessions are held etc.

Coaching at BADMINTON England Gold, Silver and Bronze Tournaments and Team Events.

Dear All,

At the meeting of the Schools and Youth Board on Sunday 29th October, we discussed the above subject in the light of experience so far.

Law 16.5.1 states that only when the shuttle is not in play (Law 15), shall a player be permitted to receive advice during a match, and the recommendations to Technical Officials (3.5.6.2) then states:

Ensure that:

·        the coaches are seated in the designated seats and do not stand court-side during the match except during the permitted intervals; (Law 16.2)

·        there is no distraction or disruption to play by any coach.

The Board acknowledged that, in most halls it would be impossible to provide designated seats behind courts due to lack of space, lack of chairs, general health and safety factors, etc. therefore we would not allow coaching from behind the court in any Gold, Silver or Bronze Tournament or Team Event.

Law 16.2.1 on intervals states that:

i)    an interval not exceeding 60 seconds during each game when the leading score reaches 11 points; and

ii)  not exceeding 120 seconds between the first and second game, and between the second and third game

shall be allowed in all matches.

The Board agreed that where matches were best of 3 to 21 rally points (Gold Tournaments), these intervals will be allowed and coaching will be permitted on court during these intervals. NB Players cannot leave the court without permission

We would also like to highlight that the recommendations to technical officials’ 3.3.6 states:

i)    In the interval during the games when the leading score reaches 11 points, after 40 seconds have elapsed, call:  “[Court ...], 20 seconds”.  Repeat the call.

(ii)  In the intervals during the first and second game, and in the third game after the players have changed the ends, each side may be joined on the court by not more than two persons. These persons shall leave the court when the umpire calls “... 20 seconds”.

In Silver Tournaments, Under13 Challenge (and probably the Inter Counties Tournament), we shall be playing best of 3 to 15 rally points extended to 21 if necessary. In these matches an interval, to enable players to take a drink and towel down, may be taken when the leading score during each game reaches 8 points and between each game. No coaching during these intervals will be permitted.

In Bronze Tournaments and the Under 15 Challenge, matches will be one game to 21 rally points (extended in knock out rounds of the Bronze). In these events an interval, to enable the players take a drink and towel down, may be taken when the leading score during the game reaches 11 points. Again, no coaching will be permitted during this interval

The Board would strongly recommend that the above is adopted at all junior events and matches. We shall review the position at the end of the season.

I also enclose a sheet of A4 which can be added to programmes or displayed at any event clarifying the position for parents, coaches and participants

Yours sincerely

  Eric W Brown

  Chair S&Y Board.

Coaching and Intervals at BADMINTON England Gold, Silver and Bronze Tournaments.

  Gold Tournaments:

All matches will be best of 3 games to 21 rally points extended to 30 if necessary.

Intervals will be permitted not exceeding 60 seconds during each game when the leading score reaches 11 points; and not exceeding 120 seconds between the first and second game, and between the second and third game in all matches.

Coaches are permitted to join the players on the court to give advice, during these intervals, but must leave the court after 40 secs. and 70 secs. respectively.

However, because in most of our halls it is neither safe nor practical to provide dedicated seats for coaches behind each court, coaching of players during a match will not be permitted except in the intervals.

Players may not leave the court without permission.

Silver Tournaments

All matches will be best of 3 games to 15 rally points extended to 21 if necessary.

In these matches an interval, to enable players to take a drink and towel down, may be taken when the leading score during each game reaches 8 points and between each games. No coaching during these intervals will be permitted.

  Bronze Tournaments

In these events an interval, to enable players to take a drink and towel down, may be taken when the leading score during the game reaches 11 points. No coaching will be permitted during this interval.

The above will be subject to review for the start of the 2007-8 Season.
